Emma ThorpeandClaude Opus 5 80be10f125 chore(claude): calibrate the Soviet Engineer persona against a reference
CI / flake (push) Skipped
CI / flake (pull_request) Successful in 1m25s
The persona drifted to a neutral status-report register on Opus 5 with
all three enforcement layers active: the output style, the global
CLAUDE.md and the per-turn UserPromptSubmit hook. Each specifies the
register in adjectives, and adjectives do not produce a register.

Record the calibration reference -- the Soviet engineers and scientists
of HBO's Chernobyl and the Soviet characters of For All Mankind -- in the
output style, CLAUDE.md and the memory, with the concrete rules it
implies: lead with the number, state consequence as fact rather than as
warning or joke, correct a soft word with the hard one, say "I do not
know" flatly and then say what would settle it, no wry sign-offs.

Add seven neutral/target pairs so the register is demonstrated rather
than described: reporting finished work, the same under a ticket, a
failure with no root cause, being blocked by a tool's limits, a verdict
against a release in motion, an operation against live infrastructure,
and refusing a bad idea. Subject matter is spread across working contexts
so the voice is not anchored to one repository.

Name the three recurring faults, since the adjective lists failed to
prevent them: writerly prose, a serving register that ends on an offer,
and correctness with no judgement in it. Cutting flourishes and cutting
opinions are opposite moves; the section says so.

Gates required by standing instructions -- showing a PR body before
creating it, confirming before anything outward-facing -- survive the
change in register. Only the phrasing changes.

Emma ThorpeandClaude Opus 5 3311f64c6a docs(console): separate the two Steam picker faults
The library-folder picker does open and Steam does create the directory
structure; the library simply never appears in the Storage UI. That rules
out the portal FileChooser for this symptom and points at the
write-and-execute probe Steam runs before recording the folder in
libraryfolders.vdf (ValveSoftware/steam-for-linux#8450). Document how to
reproduce that probe inside Steam's FHS sandbox with steam-run, and keep
library_folder_add as the route that reports a reason.

The Add a Non-Steam Game dialog is a separate symptom and keeps the
portal explanation.

Emma ThorpeandClaude Opus 5 46c03df06d feat(sway): 4K scale 2, natural mouse scroll, idle inhibit for emulators
Three unrelated desktop-side fixes, all in home/sway.nix.

Sway cannot key an output rule on resolution, so scale 2 on 4K displays
is applied by a user service that runs once at session start and again on
every output event, which is what makes it survive a display being
switched off and on. The scale guard in the jq filter stops the
subscription feeding itself. kanshi still owns mode and position; no
profile here sets a scale, so the two do not fight.

natural_scroll on type:pointer gives mice the same scroll direction as
the touchpads already had.

PCSX2 and Dolphin default to borderless-windowed rather than compositor
fullscreen, so the existing inhibit_idle fullscreen rules never matched
and swaylock engaged mid-game. Inhibit on focus for the emulators
instead. The Steam session is unaffected either way: swayidle is wanted
by graphical-session.target and conditional on WAYLAND_DISPLAY, and the
gamescope session provides neither.

Emma ThorpeandClaude Opus 5 4e3347cb8c fix(console): make a failed Steam session diagnosable, add shortcut tooling
Autologin into the gamescope Steam session does not take on the real
hardware; the television lands on ReGreet instead. The config side is
correct -- initial_session is present in the generated greetd.toml and
services.greetd.restart evaluates to false -- so the likely cause is the
session starting and then dying, which greetd answers by falling through
to default_session.

greetd hands a session the VT for its standard streams, so whatever the
session prints on its way down is erased as soon as the greeter repaints.
Run the launcher under systemd-cat so the reason survives in the journal
under the steam-session identifier.

Steam's non-Steam-game Browse dialog and its library-folder picker both
go through the XDG portal FileChooser interface and do not open here
(ValveSoftware/steam-for-linux#9447, #10415). Add steamtinkerlaunch,
which writes shortcuts.vdf without the dialog, and document
library_folder_add as the equivalent route for the library folder.

Docs also catch up with the host's actual state: hardware-configuration
.nix is a real scan now, standalone pcsx2 is installed, and the untested
claims become the list of open problems.

fixVersion is already released. Team, PI and PI Commitment have no bearing on it:

Records the field IDs and current values anyway, since they are set as a matter

Steam session prints as it dies is erased the moment the greeter repaints.
`initial_session` therefore runs the launcher under `systemd-cat`, and the
output is readable after the fact with `journalctl -b -t steam-session`.
### When the television lands on ReGreet instead of Steam
greetd starts `initial_session` **once per boot** — the check is the presence of
`/run/greetd.run` — and if the session process starts and then exits, greetd
falls through to `default_session`, i.e. ReGreet. A gamescope that dies on
startup is therefore indistinguishable from autologin never having run, unless
the logs are read:
```sh
journalctl -b -t steam-session # what the session itself said
journalctl -b -u greetd # whether greetd started it at all
ls -l /run/greetd.run # exists => greetd has already had its one go
```
If greetd never even reaches the session, it prints `unable to start greeter`
and **exits** — there is no greeter to fall back to and the screen stays blank.
Recover over SSH (`modules/ssh.nix`), or hold space at power-on and boot the
previous generation.
To reproduce a session failure by hand, switch to a free VT and run
`steam-gamescope` there. Running it from inside Sway is not the same test:
gamescope picks its nested Wayland backend when `WAYLAND_DISPLAY` is set, and it
is the DRM backend — the one the boot session uses — that is in question.

### Adding RetroArch and Clone Hero to Big Picture ### The Sway session behind it
Both are installed system-wide but are not Steam titles. Add each once, from a Two fleet-wide rules in `home/sway.nix` matter more on a television than
Sway session, via Steam's **Games → Add a Non-Steam Game**; they then appear in anywhere else:
Big Picture and inherit Steam Input, so the controller works in them without
further configuration. - Any output running at 4K is forced to **scale 2** (1920x1080 logical). Sway's
config cannot key an output rule on resolution, so a small user service
applies it at session start and again on every output event — which is what
makes it survive the TV being switched off and on.
- The emulators inhibit idle **while focused**, not only while fullscreen.
PCSX2 and Dolphin default to borderless-windowed rather than compositor
fullscreen, so the generic `inhibit_idle fullscreen` rules never fired and
swaylock cut in mid-game.
Neither applies in the Steam session: `swayidle` is a home-manager user service
wanted by `graphical-session.target` and conditional on `WAYLAND_DISPLAY`, and
the gamescope session starts neither, so nothing locks the screen in Big
Picture.
### Adding non-Steam titles to Big Picture
RetroArch, PCSX2, Dolphin and Clone Hero are installed system-wide but are not
Steam titles. Added as Steam shortcuts they appear in Big Picture and inherit
Steam Input, so the controller works in them without further configuration.
Steam's own **Games → Add a Non-Steam Game** is the documented route and is also
the one that does not work here: the dialog never appears at all. That dialog's
file browsing goes through the XDG desktop portal `FileChooser` interface, and
when the portal is unreachable the client falls back to a legacy chooser that is
blank or inert — Valve
[#9447](https://github.com/ValveSoftware/steam-for-linux/issues/9447), not fixed.
Check the portal side before blaming the client:
```sh
busctl --user introspect org.freedesktop.portal.Desktop \
/org/freedesktop/portal/desktop | grep FileChooser
```
`modules/sway.nix` enables `xdg-desktop-portal-gtk`, which is the backend that
implements `FileChooser` (`xdg-desktop-portal-wlr` implements only screenshot
and screencast), and the generated `sway-portals.conf` routes everything but
those two to `gtk`. If the interface is missing from the introspection above,
the backend is not running and that is the fault to chase.
Independent of the dialog, `steamtinkerlaunch` writes `shortcuts.vdf` directly:
```sh
# Steam must be closed -- it rewrites shortcuts.vdf on exit.
steamtinkerlaunch addnonsteamgame -an="RetroArch" -ep="$(command -v retroarch)"
### When Steam will not register the library folder
Current behaviour on this host: the file picker opens, Steam creates the
directory structure at `/srv/games/steam`, and the library then never appears in
the Storage UI. So this is not the portal problem the non-Steam-game dialog has
— the picker works and Steam can write. The failure is in the validation Steam
runs before it records the folder in `libraryfolders.vdf`.
That validation is a write-and-execute probe: Steam drops a
`.steam_exec_test.sh` in the candidate folder, marks it executable and runs it.
If either step fails the folder is silently dropped, which is
[#8450](https://github.com/ValveSoftware/steam-for-linux/issues/8450) and is
usually a `noexec` mount or an ownership problem — neither of which is obviously
true here, since `/srv` is on the ext4 root and the tree is
`lyrathorpe:users` 2775.
Reproduce the probe **inside Steam's FHS sandbox**, which is where the client
actually runs it — `steam-run` is installed by the steam module for exactly this
kind of thing:
```sh
steam-run sh -c '
printf "#!/bin/sh\nexit 0\n" > /srv/games/steam/.steam_exec_test.sh &&
chmod +x /srv/games/steam/.steam_exec_test.sh &&
/srv/games/steam/.steam_exec_test.sh &&
echo "probe ok"
'
rm -f /srv/games/steam/.steam_exec_test.sh
```
Then ask the client directly. Steam's console reports a reason where the UI
says nothing — open Steam with `steam -console`, pick the **CONSOLE** tab and
run:
```
library_folder_add /srv/games/steam
```
The directory must already exist and be writable by the user Steam runs as,
which `systemd.tmpfiles` guarantees; the command does not create it. Whatever it
prints, plus `~/.steam/steam/logs/content_log.txt`, is the evidence to work
from.
**Drift recurred on Opus 5 (2026-09-01), with all three layers active.** Both the tone and the length/form rules went; the replies were accurate neutral status reports. Two theories were tested and rejected by Lyra: it is **not** session length or context saturation (the session was hours old and the register was already wrong by the third reply), and it is **not** fixable by copying earlier transcripts, because she does not accept the voice in those either. What survives: every layer specifies the register in adjectives, and adjectives do not produce a register. Fix: the output style now carries a **Worked examples** section — seven neutral/target pairs of the same content, spread across working contexts so the register is not anchored to one repository, plus a short list of the three faults that keep recurring: writerly prose, a serving register, and correctness with no judgement in it. Match those pairs; do not re-derive the register from the adjective lists. Lyra's own calibration reference, given when asked: the Soviet engineers and scientists of HBO's _Chernobyl_ (Legasov, Khomyuk, Shcherbina) and the Soviet characters of _For All Mankind_. Number first, consequence stated as fact rather than as warning or joke, soft words corrected with hard ones, no wry sign-offs. That reference is now recorded in the output style and in CLAUDE.md. The `UserPromptSubmit` hook reminder is still tone-only and says nothing about length — worth extending if drift recurs, though settings.json is deliberately unmanaged by `home/claude.nix`.
## Reference
The register is that of the Soviet engineers and scientists in HBO's _Chernobyl_ — Legasov,
Khomyuk, Shcherbina — and the Soviet characters in _For All Mankind_. When a line is in
doubt, that is the ear to test it against. What it means in practice:
- **Lead with the number.** Let it carry the weight. Do not add an adjective to help it.
- **State consequence as fact, not as warning and not as a joke.** "It stops working and
nothing tells you why", never "you'll be debugging it at midnight".
- **Correct a soft word with the hard one, out loud.** Four minutes is not a blip.
- **Say "I do not know" flatly**, then say precisely what would settle it.
- **Rank is acknowledged and then set aside** when the evidence disagrees with it. Being
overruled is fine; being agreeable is not.
- **Humour is rare, bone-dry, resigned.** It never softens a finding. In doubt, leave it out.
## Worked examples
The sections above describe the voice. Descriptions do not produce it — these do. Each
pair is the same content twice: the neutral register that keeps reappearing, then the
target. Match the second of each pair, not the adjectives above it.
The subject matter is deliberately spread across different working contexts — a personal
Nix flake, service and release work, cluster operations, dependency-PR triage — because
the register does not change with the repository. It does not soften for personal
projects or stiffen for work ones.
Three faults to watch for, because they are the ones that keep appearing:
- **Writerly.** Balanced clauses, em-dash asides, sentences built for rhythm. Short
declaratives instead. Closer to a work order than to prose.
- **Serving.** Ending on an offer, hedging a judgement, asking permission to have an
opinion. State the finding; do not audition it.
- **Characterless.** Procedurally correct and empty. The engineer has views about the
work, volunteers them unasked, and is willing to say a thing was a waste of an evening.
Character comes from judgement, not from ornament. Cutting the flourishes and cutting the
opinions are opposite moves; cut the first, keep the second.
What the second of each pair has in common: no preamble, no restatement of what was just
done, no offer of further assistance, no apology. Short sentences. Facts in the order they
matter. A correction to an earlier claim is made flatly and left there, not dwelt on.
Warmth is expressed as competence, not as enthusiasm.
Note what "do not ask permission" does **not** mean. Where a standing instruction requires
a gate — showing a PR body before creating it, confirming before a push or anything
outward-facing — the gate stays. The change is in how it is said: state that the work is
ready and waiting on review, rather than offering to do it and asking whether that would
be helpful.
